2014 Interior Design and Remodeling Trends: Kitchen, Baths, Bold Colors Top the List

Jan 10, 2014

Thinking about renovating, redecorating, or changing up your home? Let’s look at the top interior design and remodeling trends you may want to consider for 2014.  Design professionals from Neil Kelly Company, an award-winning design-build remodeling firm shared their collective knowledge and reported on what we can expect in the new year. While trends may vary based on where you live and whether you are an empty nester, first time homeowner or new parent, Neil Kelly’s design experts agreed on certain themes.

The following interior design and remodeling trends were reported:traditional-bathroom.jpg

Trend #1.  U-Socket:

We all know that technology is taking over our lives. The new U-Socket AC receptacle replaces the standard 3-prong wall outlet. Whether it’s an iPhone, iPad, gaming device, digital camera or Kindle, the U-Socket can power any device that is charged via USB.  Not only does it have a smart sensor that allows it to shut off when the device is fully charged, but it also eliminates the need for AC adapters that stick out of the wall and take up space.

Trend #2.  Showers Show More Favor

Showers are overtaking the tub experience when it comes to bath remodels. It used to be that master bathrooms were all about the Jacuzzi or whirlpool bath. Many don’t have time for that anymore and are eliminating their bathtubs. Instead, the emphasis is on enhancing the shower experience. In addition, an increasingly popular feature is the curb-less shower.

Trend #3.  Tubs Stand Alone

If homeowners still want a tub experience in 2014, it’s likely they will select a free standing tub as a structural element, which takes up much less space in the room than the old tiled-in tub deck.

Trend #4.  Floating Shelves

Cabinets can make or break a kitchen design, and Neil Kelly design consultant Fabian Genovesi likes to break up the cabinet layout.  “I like to design kitchens that are not just long runs of cabinets but that are broken up into different sections,” says Fabian. “Don’t take up all the space with cabinets. Have floating shelves, open spaces, and room to hang wall art.”

Trend #5. The Bright Colors Have It

Radiant orchid, a mix between purple and pink, is the Pantone color of the year, but blues across the color wheel are predicted to be hot tones for 2014. Navy, in particular, has captured the interest of design experts and Neil Kelly Design Consultant Suzie Atkin says cobalt blue is a particularly hot color.

The industrial modern décor of 2013 will evolve into a more relaxed, more classic and modest look in 2014.  While stone, metal, and wood will still be popular, expect a more relaxed feel and rounded designs with earth shades and raw metal finishes.

Trend #7. Self-Expression

Whether it’s bold use of color or ornamentation, homeowners won’t be afraid to express their personality. No one wants to adorn their house with the same accessories, finishes or colors as their neighbors. Rich, jewel-tone colors, ornate and gilded frames, and layered textiles and upholsteries will be ways that homeowners can express their own design style in 2014.

Trend #8.  Multigenerational Living

While not a new trend, multi-generational living arrangements continue to grow in popularity as college students return home and aging parents move into their children’s homes. This may mean converting a living room into a bedroom, a basement into hobby space or home office, or adapting a bathroom that can accommodate aging parents. Regardless of your needs, home remodelers will seek solutions to complement the lifestyle needs of multi-generational families.

Many Americans are jumping on the “earth-friendly” bandwagon, and choice of cabinetry will be no exception. Two eco-friendly choices for kitchen cabinets include reclaimed wood and bamboo. Earth-friendly cabinets with no added formaldehyde and non-toxic glues, binders, and finishes will also rise in demand.

Trend #10.  Urban Downsizing

Downsizing continues to be a long-term trend.  Smaller spaces that are closer to urban communities rather than larger houses in the suburbs are growing in popularity.
