Spring Forward with Spring Cleaning and Home Maintenance

It’s that time again to spring ahead and to think about those Spring home maintenance projects! The annual ritual of changing the clocks is a refreshing signal that Spring is knocking on our doors. Here in New England it may not feel that way with our still snow-covered lawns. But we have had a taste of spring with some warmer days and you can expect to soon see the crocuses peeking out within your flower beds .
And what we can now look forward to are longer days of sunlight. That will give you plenty of time to get those spring home maintenance projects checked off your list. So, if you have spring cleaning on the mind, use the following list to keep you on track and get yourself prepared for the warmer weather.
Start with the inside while it’s still a bit nippy out…
- Gather the family to clean out the garage and while you’re at it do the basement too! Consider a spring yard sale or make a donation to one of your local charities.
- Wash windows inside and out.
- Get the vacuum out. Move furniture and clean those hard to reach spaces you may not clean on a regular basis.
- Inspect your air conditioning systems to make sure they are in working order.
- Put winter clothes away or in the back of the closet and donate those that will no longer be needed.
- Change your fire alarm batteries.
- Check to ensure all smoke and carbon monoxide monitors are working properly.
- Vacuum refrigerator coils.
- Drain and clean the pan underneath your water heater.
Work your way outside as the snow melts and it warms up…
- Get your outdoor furniture ready for summer entertainment.
- Remove leaves and weeds from flower beds and lawn.
- Inspect roof for leaks, missing or broken shingles or tiles and contact a contractor should repairs be needed.
- Identify the need for any exterior renovations. The warm weather is the time to get these things done.
- Power wash your house and deck if necessary.
