Homes for Our Troops Making a Difference for Veterans

Jul 04, 2014

We are taking a different twist with our blog today in celebration of the 4th of July and our Country’s independence. In honor of our military and our veterans, we’d like to send a special shout out to Homes for Our Troops (HFOT), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those who have selflessly given to our country. If it weren’t for the U.S. military that protects us each and every day, we would not be the country that we call “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

As you may know, our veterans are among the nation’s most severely injured with missing limbs, varying levels of paralysis and traumatic brain injury. These individuals must now relearn skills we all  take for granted, like walking, eating, talking and bathing. When they return home, their homes unfortunately are loaded with obstacles that make caring for themselves and their families very difficult. That’s where Homes for Our Troops is making a difference. Founded in 2004 and helping those who have been injured since September 11, 2001, Homes for Our Troops has built 166 homes that are specially adapted to allow these veterans to live more independently. With 40 homes currently underway throughout the country, HFOT is actively working to provide 40 more veterans throughout the country with a new home, mortgage-free.

Breaking ground in neighboring New Hampshire

The Raven Homes family understands how important it is that our veterans be given a chance to rebuild their lives, and once again become highly productive members of society.

Last weekend, we participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for a house to be built in Contoocook, New Hampshire for Army Staff Sargeant Matthew DeWitt, who served in Iraq and was seriously injured in 2003, resulting in the amputation of both of his arms. This was a most inspirational and amazing event, and we are looking forward to participating in the community service day that will be held as the home gets closer to completion.

Funding for Homes for Our Troops

HFOT is a privately funded organization that receives no assistance from any government organizations. All of their work is supported by donations of money, building materials and professional labor to coordinate the process of building these homes.hfot_contoocook_NH_foundation_opt1-e1404431694180.jpg

Nearly 70 percent of donations come from individual donors and community fundraisers, with the remaining financial support from corporations and foundations.

Its goal is to ultimately build 1,700 homes, and be able to meet the needs of every veteran who qualifies for one of their homes. This goal cannot be reached without the support of donations from individuals and corporations. We encourage you to learn more about HFOT and consider including them on the list of charitable organizations that you support.

Go ahead and check out the HFOT website and consider a donation to support these American heroes who have proudly served our country. For more information you can contact HFOT at 866-7-TROOPS.
