Tips When Embarking on a Renovation

Aug 15, 2014

Dos and don'ts, here are five tips from Raven Homes that we recommend to ensure a smooth remodeling process:

1) Do have an established budget

Have a payment schedule and an established budget. Don't figure your budget out along the way and be sure to include 10-15% for the extras that may arise.

2) Don't go with the cheapest bid

Getting more than one bid is recommended and it's important that all bidders are bidding on the same specifications and job description. High quality contractors use high quality subcontractors and quality people cost more. Homeowners who go for the lowest bid may end up less satisfied overall.

3) Do plan for the possibility of the project taking longer than expected

These types of projects take time and it's important to plan for the unexpected things that come up. Always add a little buffer to your anticipated timetable.

4) Don't settle for a verbal contract

Every job should have a signed contract specifying what you've agreed to. It helps avoid misunderstandings, disappointments, and unrealistic expectations.

5) Do confirm your contractor is properly licensed

In general, licensing requires a contractor to pass a test that measures his or her knowledge and competency. While licensing does not guarantee a successful project, it does indicate a degree of professionalism and is an indicator that the contractor is committed to his or her profession.
